E-drug: Mefloquin for malaria prophylaxis (cont)
---------------------------------------------
Hi

In light of this what would the recommendation for children under
13's be for prophylaxis if they cannot tolerate mefloquine;
considering that they cannot take doxycycline due to deposition in
bones and teeth?

[Doxycycline is not recommended for children 8 years of age or
younger. Mefloquine is not approved for use in children in Australia
but has been used in other countries: (using 250 mg tablet)15-19kg -
1/4 tablet; 20-30kg 1/2 tablet; 31-40 kg 3/4 tablet orally, weekly, 1
week prior to 4 weeks after leaving malarious area. Chloroquin and
proguanil have been widely used in children and pregnant women.
Other alternative is good physical protection with clothing, bednets,
repellant.  BS]
