E-DRUG: Treatment of amoebiasis (2)
-----------------------------------
In the Medical Letter 1998;40(1017)'s article on drugs for parasitic
infections recommended treatment for both mild to moderate and severe
intestinal disease is metronidazole for 10 days or tinidazole for 3
resp. 5 days. It is recommended that treatment is followed by a course
of either iodoquinol 650 mg tid for 20 days or paromomycin 25-35
mg/kg(day tid for 7 days. This is the same regimen as is recommended
for aymptomatic amoebiasis. Diloxanide is recommended as an
alternative.
If none of these drugs are available in Fiji, I have no further
advice!
