The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics of the Autonomous
University of Barcelona has pleasure in presenting the Programme of
the
Masters Degree in Pharmacoepidemiology
MASTERS DEGREE IN PHARMACOEPIDEMIOLOGY
Year 1998-99 and 1999-2000
o Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
o Preparing and Writing Research Projects and Articles
o Electronic Information on Pharmacoepidemiology
o Methodology on Epidemiology
o Clinical Trials
o Pharmacovigilance
o Drug Utilization Studies
o Therapeutics and Drug Selection and Information
o Pre-degree Teaching Methodology in Pharmacology
AIM
The main aim of this Programme is to give an advanced knowledge about
the assessment methodology of drugs and its effects on individual
patients, specific population groups and the general community. At
the end of the Masters degree the student should be able to
understand a pharmacoepidemiology study, as well as designing,
developing and writing a research work in the subject.
CONTENTS
The Programme will give advanced training on Methodology in
Epidemiology, Clinical Trials, Pharmacovigilance, Drug Utilization
Studies, Preparing and Writing Research Projects and Articles and
Electronic Information in Pharmacoepidemiology. Other two optional
courses are included such as Selection and Information of Drugs and
Predegree Teaching Methodology in Pharmacology.
To attend them, it is necessary to certify a great knowledge of
clinical pharmacology and therapeutics. A minimum of 4 intermediate
level subjects must be attended:
Methodology in Epidemiology, Clinical Trials, Pharmacovigilance and
Drug Utilization Studies. Students have the option to attend a more
advanced course on each of the aforementioned subjects, provided there
is an individual agreement with each student, depending on his/her
skills and career expectations.
ADDRESSED TO
This programme is addressed to people working in the public health
system, the health care, the university and the pharmaceutical
industry, interested in epidemiologic research in drug utilization,
clinical trials, pharmacovigilance, health care audit, establishing of
drug policies and drug selection and information.
TEACHING ACTIVITIES AND DURATION
To obtain the Masters degree in Pharmacoepidemiology it is necessary
that the student achieves 32 credits. Among these, from 4 to 9 can be
obtained by submitting a research work.
During the Masters two year duration, each student will have appointed
a form master, who will direct his/her study and research activities.
The student will be provided with a detailed dossier with selected
bibliography and text books. In order to facilitate the attendance to
the lectures, the Masters duration will be of 9 months.
The research work will be carried out at the students university,
although in some cases it could be carried out in the Pharmacology
Department of the UAB in Hospitals Vall dHebron. The subject of the
research work will be determined by mutual agreement. The final thesis
will be submitted to a board of examiners. The students interested in
a longer duration of the Masters, should agree
on a calendar with their tutor. The maximum period of duration of the
Masters is 5 years to count from the registration date.
SCHEDULE AND TIMETABLE
See summary-schedule of table.
The courses on Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics will begin the
28th September 1998 and will be imparted daily in the afternoon and
will finish in December. The rest of the subjects will begin in
January 1999 until May 1999, every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from
4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will also be courses some Fridays afternoon.
LANGUAGE
Lectures will be imparted in Spanish. Only exceptionally will be given
in English. Bibliography in English and Spanish.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Only people with a degree in Medical Sciences, Pharmacy, Infirmary,
Chemistry- Pharmacy (in Latin-American countries), Epidemiolgy and
Public Health can registry.
Any other people with a different university degree can also apply for
registration, provided their professional experience and training are
in. It is compulsory to speak Spanish and a good comprehension of
written English. People with a degree in Medical Sciences issued in
the Universitat Autrnoma de Barcelona, will be exempt of attending to
the course Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics.
REGISTRATION
The pre-registration applies must be received in the Department of
Pharmacology of the UAB in Vall d'Hebron Hospitals (see other side for
address and fax number) before 19 July. From 20 to 24 July, the list
of the applicants finally admitted will be ready.

available to Latin-American students.
DEGREE AND CERTIFICATES
The students who pass all the subjects (there will be a written exam
for each at the end of the first year) will have to submit a research
work. Once it is submitted to a board of examiners successfully, the
Universitat Autrnoma de Barcelona will issue the Masters in
Pharmacoepidemiology degree.
The students who can only attend a limited number of credits -never
less than 18 for a year (among which a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 7
must belong to the research work) - will be given a Post-degree
Certificate. In such case the registration fee will be proportional to
the total number of credits taken (25,000 pesetas/credit).
