E-drug: Drugs interfering with (copper) IUDs
--------------------------------------------
Dear e-druggers,
Our FP providers like to have clear cut instructions what to do with IUD
clients and some essential drug use: tetracyclines and anti-inflammatory
drugs.
A search in Popline on drug use and IUDs revealed controversial and even
contradictory opinions on the following two subjects:
1. Decreasing efficacy of IUD protection during anti-inflammatory
drugs(AID) use.
These drugs are used for general and IUD-specific pain releave and - that's
the contradiction - for decreasing blood loss caused by the IUD itself.
Should women fitted with an IUD take other precautions during AID use?
2. One french publication states: tetracyclines are chelators of copper and
should be avoided by users of copper IUDs.
Is that really true? Tetracyclines and doxycycline are treatment of choice
for chlamydia infections and their use is whitspread.
What should we recommend to the clients: take other drugs or use a
additional precaution (eg barrier method) during tetracycline intake.
Thank you very much for your help.
