I sent the following request letter (e-mail) to IFPMA in May 13, 1998.
I asked IFPMA for scientific evidence to explain what they mentioned about
their position on self-regulation of Marketing practices.
However, I had not yet received any responses from them.
Does anyone know or have any information/scientific evidences regarding my
request to IFPMA?.

Your response is very much appreciated. Thank you.

<THE LETTER TO IFPMA>
As a student of the Health Sciences (Department of International Health,
School of Public Health, Boston University (U.S.A.)) , multinational
pharmaceutical companies' promotion practices and issues surrounding
ethical guidelines are of some interest to me. I am currently undertaking
an study on Use and value of Drug promotion guidelines, particularly with
respect to IFPMA and WHO guidelines and each company's self-regulation
procedures.

For the purpose of my study, I would like to ask you for further
explanation on IFPMA position in "Self-regulation of Marketing Practices".
In IFPMA Issue Paper, "Self-regulation of Marketing Practices", you
mentioned the followings;

1) Self regulation, through the IFPMA Code of Pharmaceutical Marketing
Practices, backed up by national association codes and the internal
guidelines of multinational companies, provides an "efficient and
cost-effective mechanism for imposing standards for advertising and
promotional practices".
2) Experience has shown that action taken through self-regulatory codes
produces "much quicker results than pursuing cases through a legislative
process and is significantly less expensive".

Regarding the above two position of IFPMA, I would like to ask you to
provide scientific evidences for both to explain the basis of your
argument, especially for the parts with double parenthesis: " ".

Thank you very much for your cooperation in advance.
