AFRO-NETS> Tropical Diseases and Health Sector Reform 2000

Tropical Diseases and Health Sector Reform 2000
-----------------------------------------------
Source: [email protected]

Dear colleagues,

This call for proposal is on
http://www.who.int/tdr/grants/grants/hsr.htm

TDR is inviting scientists from developing disease-endemic countries
(DECs) to submit research proposals on health reform and tropical
diseases. The aim is to increase understanding of how the design of
health systems in DECs affects the ability to effectively reduce pub-
lic health problems posed by TDR diseases. Specifically, to:

    - increase the understanding, scientific knowledge and evidence of
how tropical disease control is impacted by, or should adapt to,
      reforming health sectors;

    - identify potential strategies to seize opportunities and over-
come threats, and to make these strategies available for the na-
      tional and international reform policy processes;

    - provide developing country researchers and research institutions
with financial and technical support to assemble multidiscipli-
nary teams and to strengthen skills in policy research with di-
rect relevance to control of tropical diseases.

Grants of up to US$25,000 will be awarded. The call is aimed primar-
ily at proposals that can be completed in one year, although particu-
larly innovative research that will take more than one year to com-
plete may also be considered.

Who can apply?

The principal investigator must be from a developing DEC and have
documented experience in conducting research in a discipline relevant
to the study. Priority will be given to multidisciplinary research
teams and to teams that build bridges between research, control and
policy - for example, through including control managers or policy
makers in the project steering committee, or as members of the team.

How to apply

A detailed rationale for the proposed research, together with full
details of how to apply are available in full text on the web:
http://www.who.int/tdr/grants/grants/hsr2.htm
or on request from TDR, and should be read before preparing your ap-
plication.

Proposals should be submitted using the Collaborative Research Pro-
ject application form, available at:
http://www.who.int/tdr/grants/forms.htm

One copy should be submitted in English. Additional copies may be
submitted in English, Spanish or French.

All applications must be received by 15 July 2000 at the following
address:

Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR)

The new Social, Economic and Behavioural Research Steering Committee
will review and select the proposals for funding on a comparative ba-
sis. Successful applicants will be notified in October 2000. In addi-
tion, the Steering Committee will offer successful researchers the
opportunity to participate in a methods development workshop to re-
fine methods, protocols and to establish international links between
researchers with studies of a similar nature. This workshop is sched-
uled to take place in November 2000.
