Dr. Aboubakary Tami,

In response to your request for distance learning courses in public
health, I am forwarding to you a list recently compiled by a colleague
here at INTRAH. These are only Internet-based programs. You may be able
to find courses that use other delivery methods as well.

1. Selected Internet-based courses at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill:

The Measure Evaluation Program offers a distance-learning module,
"MONITORING AND EVALUATING REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROGRAMS," available
free to the public in English, French and Spanish. This interactive,
self-study course uses the World Wide Web to teach reproductive health
evaluation skills to project managers and evaluators in the developing
world. The course focuses on evaluation methodologies in the four main
areas of the project: Maternal Health, Family Planning, Child Health &
Nutrition, STD/HIV/AIDS. The course is divided into modules and in-
cludes tutorials on diverse subjects such as how to navigate the Inter-
net, preparing an evaluation plan, selecting and calculating indica-
tors, and using Epi-Info and the WHO Reproductive Health Library (RHL).
The site also includes an extensive presentation on the critical con-
sideration of meta-analyses prepared by the Centro Latinoamericano de
Perinatologia (CLP) in Montevideo, Uruguay and the Centro Rosarino de
Perinatologia in Rosario, Argentina. URL:

The Center for Distance Learning (http://cdlhc.sph.unc.edu/cdlhc.cfm)
at UNC-CH's School of Public Heath publicly offers several of their
core courses online (http://cdlhc.sph.unc.edu/cdlhc.cfm?menu=Courses)
to non-degree seeking students. The UNC School of Public Health offers
many other Internet-based courses to degree-seeking students. The UNC-
CH distance learning MPH degree in Public Health Leadership is a 39-
credit hour program with the same basic requirements and academic rigor
as UNC's on-campus Public Health Leadership degree program. This dis-
tance learning program is designed to be completed in three years. Stu-
dents take the two courses offered each semester and come to campus for
a concentrated week of coursework each summer. A field practicum, ex-
ploring a public health problem related to the student's work setting,
includes a field placement, a major paper, a report and a presentation
using web based technology. URL:
http://cdlhc.sph.unc.edu/phl/

The UNC-CH External Doctor of Pharmacy Program provides an accessible
means for practicing pharmacists to earn the Doctor of Pharmacy degree
while minimizing extended absences from their practice. The program
builds on the education, training, and practice experience of pharma-
cists, enhancing their ability to provide pharmaceutical care within
their practice setting. The professional curriculum provides outcomes
equivalent to the on-campus entry-level Doctor of Pharmacy program, and
flexible schedules and nontraditional learning formats are used to meet
the needs of practicing pharmacists. URL:

The UNC-CH School of Medicine Expert Preceptor Interactive Curriculum
(EPIC) is a module-based faculty development system for preceptors of
health-professions students. EPIC is divided into ten modules. Each of
the first three modules focuses on one critical skill related to clini-
cal teaching in the community practice setting and include the follow-
ing topics: setting the stage, effective teaching, and evaluating per-
formance and giving feedback. The remaining seven modules focus on
teaching contemporary health issues. The hallmark of EPIC is flexibil-
ity. It may be adapted to meet the user's goals and needs. EPIC can be
used as a simple reference tool or it can function as a complete cur-
riculum. Continuing education credit is available for each module, as
well as the Expert Preceptor designation, which may be earned by com-
pleting a specified number and type of learning modules. URL:

2. Selected NON- UNC resources:

The World Lecture Hall is one of the best resources for online courses
across disciplines: URL:
http://www.utexas.edu/world/lecture/

Healthstream is a company in Nashville that does online continuing
medical education. They just signed big contracts with Duke and Vander-
bilt. Medical professionals can sign up for the accredited courses for
credit. They seem to really have a hold on the CME market. URL:
http://www.healthstream.com/

Peterson's Guide to Distance Learning Programs is an on-line catalog of
distance learning courses, by place, by institution, by subject and by
course title. 'Health-related professions' is one of the subject areas.

3. Useful websites listed in the bibliography of PRIME's publication,
Making it Happen: Using Distance Learning to Improve Reproductive
Health Provider Performance:

American Society for Training and Development
http://www.astd.org
The site offers information about ASTD and its publications, informa-
tion on all aspects of training, a chat area for discussion, announce-
ments of training programs and seminars with online registration, and
articles in current issues of the ASTD publications. For example, at
the time of this review a full text article, "Multimedia based train-
ing" was available.

Distance Education Clearinghouse
http://www.uwex.edu/disted/welcome.html
Distance Education Clearinghouse is part of the University of Wisconsin
website and contains DL news, as well as links to many DL resources in-
cluding: courses, technologies, DL introductory materials and publica-
tions.

Open Learning Agency library and information services of British Colum-
bia provides links to an extensive list of Websites relevant to DL.

International Centre for Distance Learning
http://www-icdl.open.ac.uk/
A site based on the Institute of Educational Technology, which focuses
on research, teaching, consulting and publication activities. A dis-
tance education library makes available many full text documents as
well as references to DL programs and courses, with a concentration on
Commonwealth countries.

World Bank Learning Network
http://www.worldbank.org/distancelearning/
The site includes guidelines for development of DL and answers to fre-
quently asked questions about the World Bank DL services. The site pro-
vides listings of DL courses offered by World Bank, distributed to
their field offices. Courses offered at the time of this review use
synchronous interactive technologies and include content related to
policy issues and development topics. An example of a course relevant
to the work of RH providers is "Communication for behavior change."
