A new "INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES
(ITROMID)" will start its programmes in Nairobi, Kenya next year.

JOMO KENYATTA UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE AND TECHNOLOGY (JKUAT)
INSTITUTE OF TROPICAL MEDICINE AND INFECTIOUS DISEASES (ITROMID) IN
COLLABORATION WITH KENYA MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE (KEMRI)
Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology {JKUAT} and
the Kenya Medical Research Institute {KEMRI} are jointly launching
postgraduate
programmes in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Diseases. The
programmes are designed to meet the dire need for high calibre
specialists in Health
Sciences, for Kenya and the Africa region. By combining the academic,
research, training and linkages capacity available at both institutions the
programmes aim to produce professionals measuring up to the highest
international levels of competence. For their training, students will be
mainly based at KEMRI and will have extensive access to research facilities,
training and other resources of KEMRI throughout Kenya.
Applications are invited for admissions into the following programmes for
self-sponsored students in the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious
Diseases (ITROMID) starting in March 2003:
A Master of science
1. M.Sc. in Clinical Tropical Medicine
2. M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology
3. M.Sc. in Medical Virology
4. M.Sc. in Medical Mycology
5. M.Sc. in Mycobacteriology
6. M.Sc. in Medical Parasitology and Entomology
7. M.Sc. in Molecular Medicine in the following specialization areas
i) Applied Immunology
ii) Clinical Immunology
iii) Molecular Biology
8. M.Sc. in Medicinal Phytochemistry
9. M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry
10. M.Sc. in Epidemiology
11. M.Sc. in International Health
Minimum Admission Requirements
(i) .. Holders of a university degree with at least Upper-Second
Class Honours in respective disciplines or equivalent qualification from a
University recognized by JKUAT Senate.
(ii) ... Holders of a university degree with Lower Second Class
Honours in the respective discipline or equivalent qualification plus
acceptable evidence of research ability or academic work recognized by JKUAT
Senate.
In addition to the above minimum admission requirements, applicants wishing
to be in the programmes specified below must be holders of degrees
indicated:
(i). M.Sc in Clinical Tropical Medicine - holders of M.B.Ch.B. or
equivalent.
(ii). M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry - B. Pharmacy
(iii). M.Sc. in Medicinal Phytochemistry - holders of a degree in:-
Pharmacy, or Botany, or Chemistry or Biochemistry.
B Doctoral Programmes
Doctoral programmes are available in all of the above areas of
specialization. Applicants must be holders of a masters degree in the
relevant area.
Fees
The figures shown are in Kenya Shillings (KSh). The current exchange rate
is 78 KSh = 1 US $. The fees are subject to review from year to year.
Fees for the programmes will be as follows (exclusive of accommodation and
living expenses):
Initial fees
Application fees 1,300.00 =
Registration fees 400.00 =
Student ID 100.00
Caution Money 4,000.00
II Master of Science 1st year
Tuition fees 200,000 per academic year
III Master of Science 2nd year
Tuition fees 200,000 per academic year
Research fees 150,000 per research year
IV Doctoral programme all years
Tuition fees 200,000 per academic year
Research fees 150,000 per research year
Application procedure and deadline
Candidates seeking admission are required to fill application forms obtained
from the offices indicated below upon payment of non-refundable application
fee of KShs. 1,300/-Completed application forms should be returned not later
than 30th November 2002.
