E-drug: Fixed dose drug combinations: Cough syrups (cont)
--------------------------------------------->

  Antitussives are only capable of reducing, but not eliminating coughing
fits. About a 30% reduction is considered effective. Reduction in cough fits
is beneficial to the patient/consumer as coughing can be debilitating and at
night can reduce the quality of sleep. Thus the expectorant will have its
action along side the antitussive, and the combination is not as illogical
as it would appear.

With regard to combination medicines that contain paracetamol
(acetaminophen) most countries now require that the main panel of the
packaging contain in large print something like CONTAINS PARACETAMOL, to
warn against multiple products with this ingredient. This is a potential
problem which can be helped by better, more useable labelling.
