E-DRUG Amoebic Dysentery during pregnancy

The drug of choice for treating amebiasis (particulary during the first
trimester).

The drug of choice for treating amebiosis is determined by the type of
infection. For intestinal amebiosis with dysentery, drugs of choise are
metronidazole followed by iodoquinol or another intraluminal drug. The use
of metronodazole in pregnancy is controversial. The drug is mutagenic in
bacteria and carcinogenic in rodents, and although these properties have
never been shown in humans, concern for these toxicities have led some to
advise against the use metronidazole. In summary, althought the available
reports have arrived at conflicting conclusions, up to day there are no
evidence prouving that these treatments increase the risk of major
malformations in newborns exposed in utero.
