E-DRUG Demazin Syrup
Demazin Syrup is sold in South Africa by Schering Plough for allergic
conditions. It contains per 5 mls:
cholrpheniramine malate 1.25 mg
phenylephrine hydrochloride 2.5 mg
alcohol 7.5% v/v
Preservatives: Methylparaben 0.05 m/v
Propylparaben 0.01 m/v
I should be most grateful for comments on the logic of this combination or
any risks associated with it including the preservatives.
Looking through UK information I can find some data on phenylephrine as a
topical drug and as an inhalant but not as an oral compound. Is the above
combinations licensed for use in any developed country or is phenylephrine
licensed for oral use orally? Or is this a combination licensed and sold
mainly in developing countries?
In South Africa it is licensed for use in children under 1 at 1.25 ml and
1-3 up to 5 ml bd.
