News From The Alan Guttmacher Institute - Teenage Sex
-----------------------------------------------------
Teenage sex occurs mostly outside marriage for men and within marriage
for women around the world
Sexual activity follows very different patterns for young men and women
in every geographic region of the world, in that the vast majority of
sexually experienced 15-19-year-old males are unmarried, while two-
thirds or more of sexually experienced young women are married. This is
one of the major findings reported in "Gender Differences in the Timing
of First Intercourse: Data from 14 Countries":
http://www.agi-usa.org/pubs/journals/2602100.html
by Susheela Singh and colleagues from The Alan Guttmacher Institute.
The study, published in the March 2000 issue of International Family
Planning Perspectives:
http://www.agi-usa.org/journals/toc/ifpp2601toc.html
also shows that the timing of teenage sexual initiation varies widely
by country and gender.
