HIV/AIDS Antibody
-----------------

UN WIRE reported March 13, 2000:

HIV/AIDS: Italian Researchers Claim Discovery of Antibody

Researchers in Italy last week announced the discovery of an antibody
that could prevent HIV infection. For four years, the researchers
studied the immune systems of 90 individuals who were having unpro-
tected sex with infected partners and had not contracted the disease.
In six of them, an antibody blocked the transmission of HIV, accord-
ing to biologist Lucia Lopalco. "These people were repeatedly exposed
to HIV infection, but were not infected," she said. "After four
years, we identified the presence of an antibody." When announcing
the discovery, she said that it could serve to create a future drug
(Buenos Aires La Nacion, 10 Mar, UN Wire translation).
