AFRO-NETS> Community Participation in the Health Sector

Community Participation in the Conservation and Protection of Physical
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Assets in the Health Sector
---------------------------

The Danish Government (DANIDA) as lead donor in Tete Province in Mozam-
bique is and has been heavily involved in the reconstruction and reha-
bilitation of the 80 or so health centres and health posts in this
province. In order to complement efforts from Central and Provincial
Level to protect and maintain these health units and medical equipment
therein, a pilot study/project is planned to start in 1998, with the
aim of involving local communities, i.e. users of health facilities, in
the maintenance and protection of these units.

The proposed study will make use of RRA and PRA methodologies and is
based on the active participation and consequent empowerment of commu-
nities. The outcome of the study will contribute to more sustainable
solutions related to asset conservation, but also related to broader
issues regarding health care problems as perceived by the population.

My query to the readers: Has anybody got experience in this particular
area? Are there examples from other countries where Community Involve-
ment in Asset Conservation has been attempted (preferably within the
Health Sector)? I would like to hear about it.
